Description

Our live composting red wiggler worms are grown at our worm farm in Missouri. Not only do we sell our red wiggler worms, but we also use the worms for our farm by collecting the worm castings and using them in our gardens and house plants. If you are new to worm composting you can check out our articles “Taking Care of Your Worm Bin” and also “What are the Benefits of Composting?” for the information you need to start your worm farm.

Why Buy Red Wiggler Composting Worms?

Red wigglers are one of the best composting worms you can get. These worms will consume and break down large amounts of organic material and turn it into vermicompost (worm castings) that can go straight to your garden, house plants, or your yard. Red wiggler composting worms will eat roughly ½ of their body weight in food each day. This can include your kitchen scraps, yard waste, and much more. These worm castings have been proven to produce higher yield and drought-resistant plants compared to other fertilizers. They are also 100% natural and not full of chemicals like some store-bought compost.

Red wigglers are easy to care for and require little time to maintain. Just a few minutes each week to feed and provide some water to the worms is all it takes to maintain your worm bin. They can also survive in a wide range of temperatures, moisture, and soil pH that other worms cannot. Compost worms thrive in temperatures between 65-85 degrees Fahrenheit but can survive in lower temperatures as well. They are also popular fishing worms due to their ability to survive underwater for longer periods compared to other worms such as nightcrawlers.

These worms can also make a great snack for your homestead flock. We use our worms as a protein-rich snack for our chickens, ducks, and guineas here at Hollis Farm LLC.

Ordering Your Red Wiggler Composting Worms

Once you have placed your order of red wiggler composting worms, we strive to ship the following business day depending on weather or weekend transit risks. We ship using the 2-3 day priority shipping due to the worms being perishable. Delivery times will depend on your location, but the live worms should arrive within 3 days after we have shipped them.

Your Red Wiggler Composting Worms have arrived. Now what?

Just like us, red wiggler worms are living creatures that need food, water, and air to survive. You must bring your worms inside and place them into your worm bin as soon as they arrive. We ship your composting worms in a burlap sack to provide as much airflow as possible during their trip, but they will need to be removed from this as well to provide as much airflow as possible and to cool the worms down. If your worms aren’t looking too lively, do not worry, once you get them into your bin they will be back to their normal self within a few days. After you have put them into your worm bin with enough food and water, it is important to not disturb them. You want to leave the worms alone and let them eat and grow in peace. If you are checking on them every day, this can cause distress and potentially harm your worm population. Red wiggler worms thrive in dark and quiet locations and do not like to be messed with often.

How many red wiggler composting worms should I buy?

The number of worms needed depends on how big your worm bin is and how much food you will have to feed your worms. We recommend you get 1000 worms for every 1 square foot of space you have in your worm bin or 2000 worms for every one pound of food waste you can provide each day. The average household in America throws away roughly 1.23 pounds of food per day. So if you happen to fall in that category, then we would recommend starting with 2,500 worms.

How fast will red wiggler composting worms reproduce?

If your worms are in a perfect environmental location (temperature, pH, moisture, and food) then your composting worms will reproduce very quickly. On average your worm population will double every 3-6 months but can be quicker in some circumstances. Your worm population will also depend on the amount of space they have and the amount of food available to them. Your worms will be able to tell if they are underpopulated or overpopulated and will make the corrections as they see fit.
