What is Vermicompost Tea?

Vermicompost tea, also known as worm tea, is a 100% natural fertilizer that is made using worm castings. Here at Hollis Farm, we use the worm castings that we get from our red wiggler composting worms. Our red wiggler worms will take all of the organic material that we throw into our worm bins and break it down into castings, which is just a fancy word for worm poop. We then use these castings to brew our vermicompost tea, similar to how you would brew the tea you drink and then use that to water our plants and vegetables. This is not for you to drink, it is for your plants, garden, and yard! 

How it Works

Using vermicompost tea helps to improve your soil health, which then helps your plants and vegetables thrive. Worm tea is better than the fertilizer that you buy in-store because it’s not only chemical-free, but it also increases the beneficial bacteria in the soil that is naturally produced by the worms. Adding worm tea to the water you use to water your plants will increase their growth up to 126% in some cases. 

Directions for Use

Be sure and use the tea as soon as it arrives. This will ensure you use as much of the beneficial bacteria as possible before it expires. Mix a 1:10 ratio of vermicompost tea to water. Add directly to the soil immediately after mixing. Repeat the process every 1-2 weeks. If you are using the tea to water outdoor plants, we recommend you water them early morning or right before sunset. This will help prevent the sun’s UV rays from harming the beneficial bacteria in the tea.
